Macarena – Los del Rio
A song that started a dance revolution, Macarena (Bayside Boys Remix) was released in 1994 to huge fanfare. The song features lyrics about a flamenco dancer Los del Rio met at a private party in Colombia during their South American tour in 1992. During the 90’s this song started a dance craze, also known as the Macarena – a dance which you can be sure plenty of your wedding guests will secretly know. This song is the perfect choice to get all generations on the dance floor and is an essential addition to your wedding playlist.

Did you know? The original was released in 1993 and only featured in the charts of Spain and the Netherlands, it is better known thanks to the remix by Bayside Boys. The song also introduced us to the Macarena dance which became a worldwide craze.

Mambo No. 5 – Lou Bega
Mambo fever had somewhat of a resurgence in the late 90’s thanks to this catchy song by Lou Bega. A summer hit around most of Europe, Mambo No.5 is considered a must have in every wedding playlist. It’s easy to sing-along to lyrics ensure your guests can stretch their vocal chords and introduce some Latin-esque dance moves to the evening’s entertainment.

Did you know? The song was based off an instrumental by Cuban musician Pérez Prado but was immune from copyright due to German law not allowing riffs to be officially registered. However, after a seven year trial, Prado’s estate was awarded co-writer status due to Bega’s producers› original attempts to seek a royalty agreement prior to releasing the song.

Everybody – Backstreet Boys
Backstreet Boys are the definition of a 90’s Boy Band and the song Everybody was the perfect example of a catchy and contagious pop song. Released in 1997 the song became one of Backstreet Boys most successful songs, yet failed to get to number one in the majority of charts worldwide. The song remains a classic however, and one which most of us never fail to sing-along to when it’s blasted through the speakers.

Did you know? The song title contains the words “Backstreet’s Back”, but in the United States it actually featured on their debut album. Backstreet Boys were more successful overseas, releasing their true debut album in Europe and becoming an international hit.

Wannabe – Spice Girls
Spice Girls stormed on to the music scene in 1996 with their critically acclaimed Wannabe. Going from strength to strength Spice Girls epitomised the draw of “Girl Power” going on to be the most successful girl band of all time with over 100 million records sold worldwide. Wannabe wasn’t just the start of something huge, but is itself a great song to sing along to. For this reason it becomes a must on your wedding playlist.

Did you know? The “Wannabe” we have come to love was recorded in less than an hour. Although this was the group’s debut song, Victoria Beckham (Victoria Adams at the time) has no solo lines and only features on the chorus – this was apparently due to a scheduling conflict during the writing sessions.

Coco Jamboo – Mr. President
This Reggae infused Europop song launched Mr. President into the mainstream in 1996. The soothing melodies and hip-hop inspired vocals proved a smash hit across the world landing the song a place in all the major charts. A song which still reminds us all of summer, it forms the perfect song to catch your breath to during the evening.

“Put me up, put me down. Put my feet back on the ground. Put me up, take my heart and make me happy.”
Did you know? DWhilst the song is considered a huge hit it only got to number one in five countries, including Switzerland. The accompanying video was filmed on location in Carúpano, Venezuela and features scenes from the Carnival of Carúpano.

Baby One More Time – Britney Spears
The first of many hits, Baby One More Time became a teen anthem, a multi platinum single and an award winner across multiple categories. Topping the charts in 22 counties, the “Princess of Pop” revived the Teen Pop genre and reintroduced the solo artist back into the mainstream after the successes of Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls. The catchy pop song deserves its place in the top songs for the huge influence it made to pop music in the 90’s and beyond.

Did you know? Baby one more time was initially rejected by Backstreet Boys, TLC and British boy band Five. Britney Spears was shown the song and fell in love with it, instantly knowing it would be a smash hit. Her talent and finesse ensured the song became the huge success it is today.

Boom, Boom, Boom Boom!! – Vengaboys
A song that you just can’t get out of your head, Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!! was first released in 1998 to somewhat mixed reviews. Featuring on a list for both the greatest and the worst song to be released, it features a high tempo blend of Eurodance and pop. A song which guarantees a sing-along is the reason this 90’s “classic” should feature in the late (or maybe early) hours of your wedding party.
Best Verse
“Boom, boom, boom, boom! I want you in my room. Let’s spend the night together. From now until forever.”
Did you know? Whilst it was one of Vengaboys biggest hits, it was named the fifth worst ever summer dance song whilst also ranking at 66th in the 101 greatest dance songs of the 90’s.

What is Love – Haddaway
Released in 1993 What is Love reached number one in 13 countries. Written and produced by a German music producer and composer couple, Haddaway was selected to sing the song after an extensive search for the perfect artist. Tasked with singing it a certain way, Haddaway decided to go in his own direction and came out with the song we know and love today. An essential song for your wedding playlist which is sure to get all body parts moving.
Best Verse
“What is love? Oh baby, don’t hurt me. Don’t hurt me. No more.”
Did you know? DThe female vocals on the track were from a stock sample CD titled “Datafile 1” which was released for DJs and producers to have a library of loops and sounds for their own work.

Blue – Eiffel 65
“Blue” was released by the Italian music group Eiffel 65 in 1998. Another Europop song which ignited dance fever, it was loved the world over and even nominated for a Grammy. The recognisable chorus ensured an easy song to sing along to and perhaps an all too easy song to get stuck in our heads.

Did you know? 65 was not intended to be in the group’s name, but was accidentally included when the end of a phone number spilled over onto a label. A graphic artist assumed this was an intentional addition and incorporated the 65 in artwork.

Barbie Girl – Aqua
As questionable as the lyrics and theme are, Aqua produced another hit from the world of Europop. This Danish-Norwegian band topped the charts worldwide and the novelty song is still seen today as one of the best “one hit wonders” of all time. A great song to end our top 10 and one that reminds us all of the musical gifts the 90’s provided.

“I’m a Barbie girl, in the Barbie world. Life in plastic, it’s fantastic. You can brush my hair, undress me everywhere. Imagination, life is your creation.”
Did you know? DThe manufacturers of Barbie, Mattel, attempted to sue Aqua six months after the release of the song for violating trademarks and portraying Barbie in a negative way. They were unsuccessful and later used a reworded version of the song in their own advertising.
